Before you pull anyone out of school
Deciding to teach at home is a bigger change than most families expect, and it is easier when you know what you are taking on. Read Homeschooling in Jamaica first, talk to other parents already doing it, and give yourself a term to settle in.
If you have already started
Get a week planned in one sitting
- Choose the grade you are teaching and open its page.
- Pick two or three subjects to anchor each day. You do not need all nine.
- Print a weekly planner sheet and write in what you will cover.
- Keep the finished work in one folder per child. That folder is your record.
Common worries
Things parents ask early on
Do I need to be a teacher?
No. You need a plan for the week and material to teach from. Most days you are working through a page together, not lecturing.
How many hours a day?
Far fewer than a school day. One child at a table moves much faster than thirty children in a classroom.
What about socialising?
It comes from church, sports, family, community groups and other homeschooling families — not from the schoolroom.
What if I fall behind?
Behind what? Set your own sequence for the term, keep a record of it, and adjust when a topic takes longer.
Can I still work?
Many parents do, by teaching early, in the evening, or across fewer, longer days.
What does it cost?
Everything on this site is free. Beyond that, most cost is printing, paper and the occasional book.
